Welcome to our trailer breakdown and review for Obi-Wan Kenobi!
First of all, it goes without saying that I am beyond excited for this series and to have both Ewan McGregor AND Hayden Christensen back is incredible! Especially Hayden, given the toxic backlash he received from some dark corners of the fandom. I’m happy that both of them have been reunited once again and look set for a long-awaited rematch!
Written by Joby Harold and directed and produced by Deborah Chow, Obi-Wan Kenobi is set ten years after Order 66 and the rise of the Galactic Empire. Obi-Wan is still on Tatooine watching over young Luke Skywalker, however, the Inquisitorius arrive, presumably on the trail of a Jedi, which is more than likely to be Obi-Wan! This looks set to lead Obi-Wan off-world to keep Luke’s true identity safe, and this seems to be at the core of the story given what we know so far.
As for the teaser trailer, I think it is perfect, and if I am being honest, given the six-episode format, I don’t really want to see much more until the show begins! I know that we are going to see Darth Vader in the inevitable next trailer, because you need that ‘moment’ and need to get the attention of the casual audience, but I would love it if they kept Hayden for the show itself rather than in any future TV spots or trailers.
As for the music, I think pulling from those epic prequel trilogy scores was a smart move and, if I’m honest, using Duel of the Fates is cheating! The second that choir hit the first note, I had chills all over my body and the trailer could have ended there for me! I am also looking forward to a brand-new John Williams theme for the series which I’m sure will become just as iconic in years to come!
Regarding the visuals, Dave Filoni’s legacy and influence are on full display, especially with the Inquisitorius – please, please, please… go watch Star Wars Rebels – and while the prospect of Kenobi and Vader will be the endgame, it looks like the Emperor’s Jedi hunters are going to be the more consistent antagonists. Yes, we are back on Tatooine, but we are also set to go off-world too, so I’m not too bothered by being back among the sand.
If you haven’t’ done so already, you can check out the trailer below:
As always, we pick our favourite scenes from the trailer and break them down further!
5 Things From The Trailer:
I am glad they addressed the Luke thing very early on so the focus can turn to Obi-Wan and the rest of the series. That said, it was still a lovely scene to witness, and having Luke just being a kid and playing ‘Pod Racing’, was just very wholesome. It is also very similar to a scene from the comic book material, so it was pleasing to see that influence too! With Krrsantan introduced in live-action in The Book of Boba Fett, I do wonder if we could see him appear in this series too, as he does have an encounter with Obi-Wan and Owen Lars in the comics! Speaking of Uncle Owen…
Getting Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse back to reprise their Episode 3 roles as Owen and Beru Lars is another plus for me, especially Edgerton who could easily be saying no to this type of minor role at this point in his career! It just adds yet more consistency from the prequels and keeps every connected.
Be it Star Wars Rebels or Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the Inquisitorius or Inquisitors have been a key presence in terms of the antagonists because you can’t exactly have Darth Vader losing week in, week out! So, while they have always been a threat that has been defeated, their look and their deadliness are still very effective!
While we see a few familiar faces among the Inquisitors, it is Moses Ingram’s Third Sister ‘Reva’ that seems to be a big focal point of this teaser trailer! They even feature much more than Obi-Wan! So, you get the feeling that this new character is going to be more than just a villain we follow down a linear path. Could they be conflicted and eventually turn and side with Obi-Wan? Who knows?
The Grand Inquisitor
In Star Wars Rebels, The Grand Inquisitor was voiced by Jason Isaacs, and at face value, I am gutted they didn’t get him back for this series! Especially when the rumours are he was very much interested in returning! I am not too familiar with Rupert Friend’s work and at first glance, I’m not fully convinced on the look, as he seems too fuller-faced and doesn’t have that slender-alien look. But with that said, it’s a teaser trailer so I’m going to be going in with an open mind and allow that character and actor to do their thing and we’ll see how it goes!
Here we see Sung Kang’s Fifth Brother leading a squad of Stormtroopers through a city, believed to be on a brand-new planet called Daiyu. The city itself is supposed to have a ‘Hong Kong vibe’ and the wet environments and neon lights certainly seem to reflect that. It will be good to get off-world, especially when it is to visit a brand-new plant to the Star Wars universe!
I also like the look of the Fifth Brother, much more so than The Grand Inquisitor, and he is another character taken from Star Wars Rebels, so I am all for these characters jumping to live-action!
Obi-Wan’s famous line from Attack of the Clones comes back around as we see him using a blaster multiple times in this teaser! All blaster and no lightsaber? This is unheard of! But I am more than happy for them to keep the lightsaber reveal for the show rather than giving it away in the teaser!
Here we see Obi-Wan in a stand-off with Reva down a side street and these scenes with the blaster all seem to be connected, so I don’t expect Obi-Wan to be using a blaster for the majority of the series! But, when you think about it, it does make sense if you are trying to keep a low profile as if you have Jedi hunters on your tail, a lightsaber is a big giveaway!
