She-Hulk: Attorney at Law – Episode 3 Review

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

This review is spoiler-free.

After last week’s hook, I think like many of us, I was desperate to get straight into the next episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law!

In terms of what this show is, the framework has been established pretty successfully and we have a good grasp of the characters. Towards the end of the episode, it appeared that the main story arc was finally coming into play, and while it was a little rough around the edges, it at least indicates that they are working towards something that is part of the ‘big picture’. I can sort of guess where we are heading, but with so many unknowns there is still that element of surprise and excitement.

I thought this episode, in particular, was very creative and playful in regard to the fourth wall breaking, and there were multiple moments throughout the episode where the jokes really landed. There was a moment at the start and towards the end in particular that are sure to raise a smile.

Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk) was once again brilliant and for me, Tim Roth (Emil Blonsky) just brings something special to every scene he is in! Josh Segarra (Pug) and Ginger Gonzaga (Niki) and more time to shine too this week, with Segarra, in particular, getting to flex his legal muscle. Despite all of these great performances, I think the standout this week was Drew Matthews (Dennis Bukowski). Yes, his character is a misogynistic w****r, but we dislike him so much because the performance is so good! We saw Wong in the trailer and after last week, pulling from Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, it’s not a spoiler to say that Benedict Wong (Wong) does make an appearance and as per normal, he does not disappoint!

As for the negatives, this was the first episode where I’ve felt there have been some issues. A lot has been said about the visual effects on She-Hulk but, so far, I think it’s been fine, however, there was one scene in this episode that looked really out of place and did make me wince a little. I also had little to no interest in the Megan Thee Stallion cameo nor the post-credits stinger. But if it works for you, I’m happy for you.

Overall, this was probably the weakest of the three episodes so far, but it still had plenty of highs and the show still remains very strong overall. The outstanding performances and the quality of the writing continues to elevate the show and there are no signs of any of these things changing anytime soon.
