I’ll be honest, despite loving this show, I honestly thought I would struggle with this episode – which has influencer culture front and centre. It’s not something that I can really stomach, and while I knew the episode would look to parody and untangle the concept, it was still an inner fight that I had to struggle with. But of course, I was wrong. I have trusted the writing to deliver so far, and it always has, and this episode was no different. So, I am holding my hands up, I should never have doubted the writing! This episode was actually a lot of fun with both main and sub-plots linking up nicely and I loved that we had two different pairings this week!
The first pairing is Jennifer (Tatiana Maslany) and Mallory Book (Renee Elise Goldsberry). Mallory, who in the comics is known as ‘the face that never lost a case’, was very briefly introduced in Episode 3, so it was nice to finally get a full episode with her. Goldsberry was fantastic throughout and I want to see her more involved in the show going forwards. Mallory is representing Jennifer in the legal case with Titania (Jameela Jamil) and this was yet another episode where we get to see the fighting done in a court of law. And for a ‘fun lawyer show’, that is what I want!
The second team-up was a lot of fun! I just loved that we have Pug (Josh Segarra) and Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) going on a little adventure together and the two just complimented each other’s performance. The pair are introduced to Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews) – a superhero fashion designer with an ego to rival that of Tony Stark! Luke is a minor, but comic-established, character so I thought it was cool that they decided to bring him in here to fill this role. He is mostly associated with Dakota North – another obscure Marvel character. I do wonder if this is an indication of possibly making Dakota North a thing in She-Hulk, especially since she also has links to the Devil of Hell’s kitchen… Regardless, I thought Griffin Matthews did a great job and if he is to become to go-to superhero outfit guy, then I am all for it!
The final shot of the episode is going to create a lot of chatter on the internet, so be sure to watch the episode before things are spoiled.
Overall, I think was another good episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. It introduced two potentially fun characters, Mallory and Luke, and beautifully showcased women looking after women. I always enjoy it when She-Hulk takes aim at toxic, mostly male, culture and there was a great dig at guys sitting behind their keyboards. There was also a sobering one-liner about women being able to wear headphones outdoors without feeling in danger. Despite the fun and quippy tone of the comedy elements, I appreciate this show continues to talk about these, mostly women-exclusive, issues and put them in the spotlight.
