She-Hulk: Attorney at Law – Episode 8 Review

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

This review is spoiler-free.

A Superhero suit malfunction leads to She-Hulk taking on a legal case against the very man who designs her outfits? Uh-oh!

That’s right, this week we get back to lawyer stuff as Jen must represent Eugene Patilio AKA Leap-Frog (Brandon Stanley) against Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews). Having Griffin back in the show is always a delight and I said last time I wanted to see more of him, so I am very happy that we got this! Leap-Frog versus Jacobson isn’t the only lawyering Jen does this week, as a familiar face from ‘Nightmare of Dates Past’ resurfaces and is involved in a Wakanda-based mini sub-plot which I think was played out really well. Think white privilege and colonisation.

Now, I know this is a spoiler-free review, but we all know Daredevil is coming… and there is no way you have reached this far without knowing that this is the episode he makes his costumed MCU debut. I have already seen people comparing his role in this episode against his multi-season run on Netflix and talking about how he is too quippy and has some tonal issues. Look, Daredevil is easily my second favourite superhero of all time and the Netflix series, and Charlie Cox, in particular, are pure perfection! Yet if you go to the comics he has always been quippy and Cox even brings these moments to the more severe and ‘grounded’ Netflix series too. So I personally don’t see any validity to this criticism. As for his influence on the episode – his arrival made me EEK out loud and I am officially shipping #JenDock – as these two have off-the-wall chemistry that had me smiling from ear to ear! With that said, this is still very much Jen/She Hulk’s show and she is key to every event within the episode.

This episode did a great job of subverting character expectations and there were some powerful story moments that really elevated the episode. As for the ending, it was a painful, upsetting and sickening watch and sets the series up for one hell of a finale! We are with you Jen! ❤
