The Walking Dead – Season 11, Episode 20: What’s Been Lost

Our group are being abducted! On the back of Rosita’s capture last week, we start with an attempt on Carol and Daryl! As you would expect, they didn’t go down without a fight! It turns out that Pamela is behind the roundups, and she has also suspended all migration into the Commonwealth. All this is because she wants leverage over Yumiko to ensure she prosecutes Eugene. And what’s the answer to the way out of this situation? Lance Hornsby!

As expected, Hornsby is alive and… well, I wouldn’t say ‘well’, but he’s alive! Daryl finishes off Sebastian and Carol tries to break through to Hornsby, with some forceful help from Daryl. Before being able to complete their escape, they are separated by some Stormtroopers, forcing Carol and Hornsby to flee the city. With Hornsby leading the way, an underground encounter with a group of Walkers leads to yet another amazing practical Walker effect! The ‘Skin Walker’ was such a great visual, it looked fantastic! I love when the show utilises practical effects like this – something the show has been consistently good at doing! Just as they make it out of the other side, they are surrounded by the squad hunting them – who are not in the mood to take prisoners! Luckily, Daryl arrives to save the day! With Hornsby no longer of any use, he’s ‘released into the wild’, with Daryl and Carol having no intention of continuing on their mission with him. Despite his pleas that he has changed and can be trusted, Hornsby takes one last roll of the dice and goes for a gun, but before he can pull the trigger, Carol kills him with an arrow shot to the throat.

Back inside the Commonwealth, after overhearing the radio chatter about Daryl and Carol’s escape, Yumiko decides to defend Eugene and not prosecute him, much to Pamela’s shock. There was a good amount of applause for this statement, which shows that Pamela and her wealthy elite may think this will be an easy matter to resolve, but clearly, civil disobedience is still out there. The people want change! Change can’t come soon enough for the captives, who are being drugged and moved around as part of a convoy. Just how do they escape their fate? Looks like all eyes are on Daryl and Carol on the outside, with Yumiko taking the fight into the courtroom in next week’s episode!

Overall, this was an ok episode of The Walking Dead. Very middle of the road, with plenty of setup for the next part of the story. It was an easy watch, but the overall story progression felt a little sluggish at times. My biggest disappointment of the episode was killing off Hornsby! A fate that is very different from his comic book counterpart! I think the character had so much potential, definitely more than Pamela as the main antagonist. Josh Hamilton was incredible in the role, and I think it was mostly his performance that gave me the enjoyment of watching the character. I think his loss is a mistake at this stage of the series and his character was greatly underused.
