The Rig Review

This review is spoiler-free.

David Macpherson’s supernatural eco-thriller The Rig is Amazon Prime Video’s latest binge-worthy series and at six episodes long, you’ll find yourself consuming the entire series in one go!

While there are some familiar elements and influences, The Rig’s story is pretty much its own thing and you will be kept guessing throughout the six episodes as the story twists and turns and leaves you desiring more as each episode ends. The pacing is exceptional, and the series can easily be watched in one sitting – due to the fantastic writing and engaging story.

As engaging and thrilling as the story was, the real key to The Rig’s success stems from the incredibly talented cast – mostly made up of Game of Thrones, Line of Duty and Doctor Who alumni – who, individually and collectively, deliver career-best performances across the board. Everyone has a part to play, from the primary actors to the supporting roles, and they play it exceptionally well! Iain Glen (Magnus) is an exceptional lead performer for the series, with Martin Compston (Fulmer) and Emily Hampshire (Rose) standing tall on either side of him. I was equally impressed by the talents of Rochenda Sandall (Cat), Molly Vevers (Heather) and Calvin Demba (Baz), who all were wonderful in their respective and very different roles. There were also really enjoyable cameo performances from Mark Bonnar (Alwyn) and Mark Addy (David) who just helped add to the quality of the ensemble cast.

As for the negatives? Other than some less-than-convincing VFX, which was consistently rough throughout the series, there is very little to highlight as letting the show down. There are some very obvious influences within The Rig, but it still remains very much its own thing, so I wouldn’t say this is a concept that has been ‘overdone’ before. It still has an air of freshness around it.

As for the future? There is plenty of scope for more! Or it could be a one-and-done. The ending is satisfying in regard to the six-episode arc, but also leaves the option for continuation, which I for one would welcome!

Featuring an exceptional ensemble cast, The Rig is a must-watch and binge-worthy supernatural eco-thriller packed full of incredible suspense and nail-biting tension.
