The Bad Batch – Season 2: Episode 5 Review

This review is spoiler-free.

The Bad Batch is off on a treasure hunt!

The crew are joined on the adventure by Phee Genoa (Wanda Sykes), who was briefly introduced in the season opener. Phee is a treasure hunter/space pirate, whose stories of her past adventures get more unbelievable every time she tells them. She talks a big game, but the Batch soon finds out that she can actually back up her wild claims. Sykes is great casting and as Phee Genoa she is a really enjoyable watch. I also enjoyed this episode as it gave Omega a good platform to showcase her skills and I think this served as an important reminder to the audience that she is more than just a ‘tag along’.

As for the story, like last week, it was something a bit different and I really enjoyed it. Phee is such a grey character, and that level of mistrust with the rest of the Bad Batch kept everything interesting. This was very much a self-contained story, but there were some subtle character growth moments for a few people, so there is still one eye on what the story is building to. Looking at the episode titles from 7 to 16, I am confident we will get to the wider, overarching story, so having another one-off adventure at this stage is perfectly fine. I am not concerned.

I really enjoyed the music and lighting in this episode, and it really complimented the treasure-hunting, puzzle solving and adventuring elements within the story. One thing about The Bad Batch, it always looks and sounds fantastic! And on one quick final note, having very recently played Horizon Zero Dawn, for the first time, recently, there is one element that left me with a very large smile on my face.

This was another fun, and different, episode of The Bad Batch and the heavy inclusion of Wanda Sykes made it even better! With wonderful music and elegant lighting, the technical elements are once again first-class.
