It’s been a while now since we’ve seen Crosshair, so this episode was long overdue!
Crosshair is tasked with escorting Lieutenant Nolan to secure supplies on a distant outpost, set deep in the harsh snow wasteland. Nolan has no time for Clones, and if working with Crosshair and his men was an annoyance, having to deal with the surviving troopers at the outpost proved just as irksome, in Nolan’s eyes. Crosshair and the outpost Commander, Mayday, strike up an unlikely understanding and, dare I say it, mutual respect for each other. Seeing Crosshair getting anywhere close to appearing to be bonding with another character is an interesting development. We already teased this with his time with Cody, so this felt like the next step and natural progression – it felt very in character for where mentally he is right now.
Nolan was the typical arrogant, but useless, Imperial Officer type and the perfect way to make Crosshair feel like the protagonist of the episode. As for Mayday, I thought he was a tremendous new addition to the show and felt more of a ‘Bad Batch’ type character rather than a generic Clone. He had so much personality and individuality, not to mention a wonderful design, and it just made for a much more engaging character and worked better for the story overall.
I really loved the setting for this episode. There is just something really cool about an isolated outpost set in a snowy wasteland! The snow and wind elements all looked great, as did the lighting and colour palette of the episode. For something so white and vast, it was actually, in its own way, rather beautiful!
The ending of this episode was a pivotal moment for Crosshair, and with how the scene was set up and with the music, it gave me chills. It was incredibly emotional. What does this mean for Crosshair and the story going forwards? It appears everyone is starting to converge down the same path, and I cannot wait to see where this leads!
Overall, I really loved this episode! This was a personal and emotional journey for Crosshair and a story and direction that I hoped we would explore. The visuals were stunning and Kevin Kiner’s score was truly beautiful. The last few episodes of The Bad Batch have been top-tier, in every single aspect, and long may this continue!
