Hellbound is an intense and captivating show that takes viewers on a journey into a dystopian world where people are being hunted down by supernatural beings known as “Angels of Death.” The show is visually stunning and boasts incredibly high production values with, mostly, impressive special effects – although some of the VFX work on the “Angels” looks a little rough around the edges during the daylight scenes against the real-world backdrop.
As for the story, it is well-crafted and definitely keeps viewers on the edge of their seats with plenty of twists and turns along the way! The show’s creator, Yeon Sang-ho, who also directed the critically acclaimed – and phenomenal – Train to Busan, has once again shown his refined expertise in crafting a gripping and thrilling narrative that will certainly entertain the viewers. I believe the fact that the show is based on his own webtoon, of the same name, ensured a smooth transition from the different formats and that really tells of the love and care taken with the show’s creation.
The cast of Hellbound is outstanding, with powerful performances from the lead actors. Yoo Ah-in (Jung Jin-su), who plays the role of a lawyer investigating the mysterious killings, delivers a standout performance that showcases his range as an actor. Other notable performances include those of Park Jung-min (Bae Young-jae), Kim Hyun-joo (Min Hye-jin), and Won Jin-ah (Song So-hyun). The wonderful performance from the cast is definitely one of the show’s greatest assets!
What I enjoyed the most about the series was how the show also explores complex themes such as faith, power, and the nature of good and evil. The storytelling is nuanced and thought-provoking, offering viewers plenty of material for discussion and reflection.
Overall, Hellbound is a fantastic addition to the Netflix catalogue and is highly recommended for fans of horror, thriller, and dystopian genres. It is a gripping and intelligent show that will leave viewers wanting more!
As for the future? Netflix has already announced a second season is in the works and given how this first season ended, I’ll be waiting in patient anticipation for its return!
