We have finally arrived at the Season One finale of The Last of Us and it’s been an emotional ride!
The story heavily followed the events, decisions, and character choices made in the video game, so there were no real surprises in this finale. The show, in general, has managed to find that balance between introducing new elements and mixing them with established concepts. With that said, I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a different approach to the ending, and that they stuck to the video game script pretty rigidly.
There were iconic many scenes in this episode, but for me, the high point was Joel in the hospital. This was both terrible and great! I loved the way they filmed these sequences and appreciate the choice of muffling the audio, as it just added to the chaotic and terrifying nature of the scene.
Pedro Pascal (Joel) and Bella Ramsey (Ellie) were, once again, on top form and really delivered in this finale. We also had Ashley Johnson (Anna), who voices Ellie in The Last of Us video games. Having Ashley play Ellie’s mother was a smart move and she did such a fantastic job in the role. We are also reunited with Merle Dandridge (Marlene), who was excellent, as expected. The casting for the entire season has been really solid and everyone they have brought into the show has really added to the overall quality of the performances.
Overall, this first season has been incredible, and for me, I enjoyed the first series much more than The Last of Us video game. I still believe the franchise is more suited to TV, and this first season enforces that opinion. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey have been fantastic! Whether performing individually or acting together, both of them have been perfectly cast in these roles and taken these characters to new heights.
