Synopsis:

In a dystopian future devastated by air pollution, the survival of humanity depends on the Black Knights — and they’re far from your average deliverymen.

Based on the webtoon of the same name, by Lee Yun Kyun, writer and director Cho Ui-seok excitingly brings this story to life with expert pacing, well-fleshed-out characters and some great action set pieces!

The story itself has a few familiar tropes and aesthetics, but the tale is also uniquely fresh, especially in relation to other series on Netflix. I enjoyed following the two main leads and getting the perspective of others – from side characters to the villains – it was a nice blend. Despite the series’ dystopian setting, Black Knight skillfully explores social and moral dilemmas prevalent in contemporary society. The series delves into themes of corruption, injustice, and segregation. It raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of morality and the lengths individuals will go to achieve their goals. The characters are also well-fleshed out, enhancing the overall richness of the narrative.

Speaking of the characters, this impressive cast is full of talented performers! The two main leads – Kim Woo-bin (5-8) and Kang You-seok (Yoon Sa-wol) work exceptionally well, both together and individually. Supporting the leads, are Esom (Jeong Seol-ah) and Song Seung-hun (Ryu) who both earn their presence in the series with two very different, but just as compelling character portrayals. While minor characters, I thought the inclusion of Kim Eui-sung (Grandpa) and Jin Kyung (President Jin-kyung) was another welcome addition to the cast.

In terms of the visuals, the action sequences are choreographed with precision, adding thrilling and adrenaline-pumping moments to the narrative. From an aesthetic point of view, the series’ sepia tone is given vibrancy with the slick editing and pacing, so while the story and setting are bleak, the enjoyment of the experience is anything but!

With its intriguing storyline, compelling characters, and stylish execution, Black Knight is an exciting sci-fi action-adventure series and a great addition to the Netflix catalogue.
