Loki Season 2 – Episode 1: “Ouroboros” Review

This review is spoiler-free.

Our favourite God of mischief has returned and if this first episode is anything to go by, the time-travelling antics of the first series are about to be eclipsed!

This first episode, of the second season of Loki, really pushes the boundaries in time-travelling hijinks. Still, it also feels like they are only just beginning to flex their creative muscles – which bodes well for the remaining five episodes! Speaking of the five episodes, this is my biggest concern, as I don’t feel that is nearly enough to truly showcase what the show has to offer. I felt this last season, and while I loved the first season, I still believe it would have benefited from a minimum of eight episodes to take a little more time to allow the show to breathe.

One of my favourite elements of Loki, aside from the great performances and slick narrative, is the music and editing, and once more, this first episode showcases this to perfection. I love the Loki score, it is so distinctive and lingers with you. As for the editing, they execute the polished editing with finesse and weave it into the storytelling to significant effect!

In terms of the cast, little needs to be said about Tom Hiddleston (Loki) at this point. He knows the role by heart, and Loki allows the character to transition in new and exciting ways. Owen Wilson (Mobius) has been a constant source of comedy throughout the first season, and once again he truly shines in this episode! Wunmi Mosaku (B-15) is also once again a real highlight. As for the new additions, Ke Huy Quan (OB) is a wonderful ball of charm, warmth and fun! Quan’s line delivery and timing are exceptional. Kate Dickie (General Dox) and Liz Carr (Judge Gamble) have also joined the show in supporting roles as key members of the TVA and you can always count on this pair to offer great value to any part. I am very excited to see their roles blossom.

Regarding the story, I feel like they are setting up this series to go above and beyond our expectations, and I am hopeful that the season continues on an upward trajectory. This first episode is a high starting point! The episode showcases the outstanding performances, fun action and exciting storytelling that makes Loki such an incredible show!
