This review is spoiler-free.

Episode 2 of Loki is the week bookended with two great action set pieces. The opening sequence was filmed incredibly well and included some tremendous camera work for the chase scene, which added natural energy and motion that heightened the opening’s impact on the viewer. The final act features some great in-fight moments and a powerful score that is incredibly moving and works in perfect harmony with the visuals. Sandwiching the “police procedural” feel, and character and story development, this ensured the pacing of the episode was precise and well executed. The “filling” of the episode contained some sensational acting as well as explorative and contemplative character moments. The story progressed to the next stage of the journey, with a few narrative seeds planted that will hopefully come to bloom before the season finishes!

Speaking of the performances I mentioned previously, I thought Tom Hiddleston (Loki) was sublime in this episode. We know he can act, but his dedication, understanding and the seriousness with which he approaches this role ensures a perfect performance every time. This episode once again showcased the wonderful chemistry between Hiddleston and Wilson (Mobius) – I could watch these two talk all day! We also got a lot more Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie) in this episode, and that is always a good thing.

From a visual standpoint, I enjoyed the 70s and 80s aesthetics in the different timelines, both distinctive yet also complementary to the 50s vibe of the TVA. The production elements of Loki continue to impress me, everything from set design and props to the wardrobe and colour palette. It is clearly identifiable in its visual style which will always set it apart from the other Marvel TV shows.

Finally, this episode served as a reminder of Loki’s magical powers, which were absent in the season opener! While I love the grounded approach they take with the show, having these super-human moments just helps to remind the audience that you are watching an MCU show! Loki shows off a few new tricks in this episode, perfect for the God of Mischief!

Overall, it was another wonderful episode of this incredible show! You feel the drama and tension building and the story is unfolding at a good pace. The cast, writing and visuals continue to showcase just how amazing Loki is as a series!
