Loki Season 2 – Episode 3: “1893” Review

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

This review is spoiler-free.

Series 2 of Loki has been unbelievably strong, even after only two episodes. So, I was eager to see if they could make it three out of three…

Set in Chicago, Illinois in 1983, our favourite God of Mischief is on the hunt to find a way to save the TVA from total destruction! An element of this episode will be familiar to you if you see the final post-credits scene of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. With a runtime of just under an hour, this is the most extended episode so far – and it needed to be! There is a fair bit of story and character development to get through, but the pacing is well-handled, and you won’t notice the episode length at all!

Loki’s music continues to be such a delight, and there were multiple moments when the music was used to great effect! To begin with, the Marvel Studios intro gets an old-timey jingle that sets the tone for the rest of the episode! There is also an action sequence where the music aids the playfulness and comedic beats of the scene. We also got several re-compositions of the main theme scattered throughout which were incredible. Natalie Holt continues to shine!

In terms of the cast, it is pretty much the same as before! All of the ensemble cast are great and this continues to be one of the show’s strongest elements.
I don’t class this as a spoiler, as they were both previously announced as returning for the second series, but it was great to have Tara Strong (Miss Minutes) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Renslayer) back! Their individual strengths each bring their own positives to the show, and I feel that the one thing missing from Series 2 has been Miss Minutes! Miss Minutes got plenty of screentime and they really did some interesting things with her! There was also an enticing interaction between Miss Minutes and Renslayer that looks set to ignite the next phase of Renslayer’s character development.

With its outstanding performances and stunning score, Loki continues to showcase why it is the most consistent and highly entertaining MCU series, and I cannot wait to see where the story heads next!
