It’s been am incredible seven weeks, but all good things must come to an end! Let’s dive straight into the season finale of The Acolyte…
The story picks up with Osha experiencing a Force Vision of Mae killing Sol. The suspense builds as it’s now a race to see who will reach them first—Osha or Qimir. Our endgame is set!
On Coruscant, we meet Senator Rayencourt, portrayed by the always-incredible David Harewood. The Senate has caught wind of the Jedi’s internal investigation, and Rayencourt raises valid concerns about the Jedi operating without oversight. It’s intriguing to see this conversation emerge in this era, hinting at future conflicts.
After an exhilarating starship chase through a planet’s ring, Mae and Sol return to Brendock. With everyone converging on the planet, the stage is set for a climactic showdown. The thrilling starship chase is soon surpassed by an incredible lightsaber duel between Qimir and Sol. The choreography and camera work are exceptional, showcasing some of the best lightsaber sequences in the Star Wars Universe. Meanwhile, Mae and Osha’s fight, though lacking lightsabers, is equally impressive, brimming with raw emotion and kinetic energy. This unique style of combat has become part of the show’s identity.
As the truth about Sol’s role in the tragedy is revealed, Osha kills Sol with a Force Choke and corrupts his Kyber crystal. This intense scene grants Sol some absolution, though Osha’s fate remains uncertain. Sol was a beloved character and will be missed. The Jedi, led by Vernestra, arrive, and she quickly connects with Qimir, confirming their Master and Padawan past. With the Jedi closing in, Mae and Osha finalise their plan. Mae sacrifices herself by having her mind permanently wiped of all memories of her sister and their experiences. Vernestra, begrudgingly, blames Sol for the tragedy, but the threat of a Senate review still looms. She plans to use Mae to find Qimir but first must visit her master, Master Yoda. A glimpse of Yoda’s head is enough to excite fans, at least it was for me!
The season finale does plenty to set the stage for a second season. While Osha and Mae’s story feels complete, the mystery surrounding Qimir and Vernestra’s backstory is now more compelling. Who is Qimir’s master? Was it the figure seen in the cave? Could it be Darth Plagueis? If so, it opens up many intriguing narrative possibilities.
Despite some unanswered questions, the future looks promising, especially if the Darth Plagueis storyline is explored. The show’s focus on creating life through the Force ties in well with Plagueis’s motivations. I’m eager to see these characters return and the story continues. While not perfect, The Acolyte has delivered some of the best emotional performances and lightsaber battles in the Star Wars universe. For me, the first season has been a highly rewarding experience filled with memorable moments.
