This review is spoiler-free.

The first part of the final season of Cobra Kai has arrived – and it does NOT disappoint!

In the wake of Season 5’s explosive events, The story resumes as characters grapple with the aftermath of defeating Terry Silver and Cobra Kai. Now, they face a new challenge: the Sekai Taikai. With Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, and even former Cobra Kai students joining forces, the question remains, whether these fractured relationships and fragile allegiances can withstand the pressure.

The writers excel at weaving multiple storylines together, ensuring each character’s journey is compelling and meaningful. In this first batch of five episodes, we witness incredible character growth. It feels like a final season, drawing from the entire Cobra Kai and The Karate Kid franchise to deliver a fitting send-off. Cobra Kai, a show that seems unlikely to succeed on paper, continues to surprise with its emotional depth and entertainment value, leaving viewers with goosebumps, tears, and smiles.

Cobra Kai‘s signature humour remains sharp, providing plenty of laughs amidst the drama. The series pays homage to its roots in The Karate Kid films while carving out its own identity in modern television. This blend of nostalgia and innovation is a testament to the show’s enduring appeal and ability to evolve while staying true to its core. The fight choreography captures the essence of previous seasons, though it feels that they are saving the biggest battles for the Sekai Taikai in Part 2. The show maintains its vintage Cobra Kai look and feel, perfectly nailing the tone.

William Zabka (Johnny Lawrence) and Ralph Macchio (Daniel LaRusso) continue to anchor the series, providing a solid framework for the younger cast. Partnerships, whether friendships or rivalries, are central to Cobra Kai. One of the most intense dynamics has been the relationship between Miguel (Xolo Maridueña) and Robby (Tanner Buchanan). Season 6: Part 1 delivers long-awaited developments in their relationship, showcasing their push towards a common goal despite the challenges. Samantha (Mary Mouser) and Tory (Peyton List) also have a well-executed, emotional arc following the downfall of Cobra Kai, with Peyton List delivering standout performances in the final episodes. Even secondary characters like Kyler (Joe Seo) experience significant growth. The introduction of a new antagonist Kwon (Brandon H. Lee), Sensei Kim Dae-eun’s top student, adds a fresh layer of tension and ruthlessness, and I cannot wait to see him come face to face with the students from Miyagi-Do.

The final episode is brimming with raw emotion, testing our characters’ status quo. With Miyagi-Do arriving at the Sekai Taikai, viewers are treated to an outrageously dramatic reveal that, while predictable, fits perfectly within Cobra Kai‘s soap opera nature. This moment, which could be ridiculed in other contexts, is significant and jaw-dropping within the show, demonstrating its ability to captivate and envelop the audience.

With engaging storylines, strong performances, balanced humour, and high drama, Cobra Kai Season 6: Part 1 continues to honour its origins while evolving in exciting ways. The anticipation for Part 2 is high, given the quality of writing and performances in Part 1. November 15th cannot come soon enough!
