Who Is ‘The Last Jedi’?

We finally have a title for Star Wars Episode VIII, and it’s safe to say that the title has sparked quite the debate. This Christmas Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in cinemas, but until then there will be lots of speculation surrounding the title.

Before we get in to the title, we want to take the time to look at the striking announcement poster. Straight away the red text stands out, ominous is it not?
This could be an early indication to the film’s tone, with many already believing that Episode VIII will be the ‘Empire Strikes Back’ of the new trilogy.
Does the colour possibly suggest that this film will have a darker tone than The Force Awakens? More than likely. With Luke training Rey, the subject of The Knights of Ren and losing Kylo to the darkside are bound to crop up at some point. This was the main reason that Luke went in to exile. He has always tip-toed on the line between the light and the darkside, so with so much conflict in him, you can assume that will reflect in a darker, more emotional story.
There is also the fallout of Han’s death, this does not only have implications for Kylo, but it will also see Luke possibly coming to terms with the death of one of his closest friends.

It is also worth mentioning that The Last Jedi is not the first Star Wars poster to feature red text. Both Return of the Jedi and Revenge of the Sith have used red text, but as both these films ended a their respective trilogies, could this signal the end of something or someone in The Last Jedi? We will have to wait and see.

Now that we’ve looked at the poster, what about the title itself?

On the face of it, there is no clear answers to whom or what the title is referring to. It could be referring to Luke as the last fully trained Jedi, or it could even be hinting that Rey is to be ‘The Last Jedi’, meaning that Luke will train one final apprentice.
It might not just suggest one specific character though. Jedi is also used as a plural, so it could be both Luke and Rey, or as Luke is on Ahch-To in search of the first Jedi Temple, it could be referring to the Jedi Order itself.

There is also another theory to consider in regards to the title, and that’s the theory that the three films will create a small phrase. So far we have… ‘The Force Awakens…The Last Jedi…’ – Now, that in itself works, and if you take stock in this theory then you can spend hours trying to guess the title of Episode IX.

Whatever the title may or may not suggest, there is one thing we know for certain, a teaser trailer is not far behind this reveal. Now that is going to be exciting!
