X-Geeks Christmas Message 2020

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

I think this time last year, many of us were looking forward to 2020!

The movie, TV, video game and comic book slate looked packed full of amazing titles that would, undoubtedly, bring us lots of joy. Few could have predicted what was to follow, a global pandemic that would make all the things listed irrelevant.

It has been an incredibly tough year for most of us, but even during the darkest moments there have been glimpses of light, from our courageous NHS and frontline key workers, to amazing individuals and groups going above and beyond to help others and those in need. 2020 will also be remembered for when the good among us took a knee or stood shoulder to shoulder and raised our voices to make sure that those in power know, in no uncertain terms, that Black Lives Matter, Trans Lives Matter and the future of this planet matters. While the politicians may have failed us, on every level, those people I have just mentioned have not. We will never forget their actions and sacrifices.

If you have lost a loved one this year, be it a family member, friend or colleague, I am truly sorry. I cannot begin to imagine what you must have gone through, especially given the extra restrictions in place that only add further hindrance to the grieving process.

With the new Tier 4 lockdown measures, lots of people will be spending Christmas alone, away from their families. Lockdown was tough on a lot of people’s mental health, and over the Christmas period these issues have the potential to amplify. If you are alone this Christmas, or even if you are not, and want someone to talk to, please DM me either on X-Geeks or my personal Twitter account (@IamZavagno). I am going to be taking part in #JoinIn on Christmas Day and will be around throughout Christmas should anyone need to talk. I’m available for WhatsApp chats, Face Time, whatever you need. It doesn’t have to be serious talk, if you just want to chat about films, games, sport, whatever, I will be here for you if you need it.

On a similar note, 2020 has been a very hard year for me, personally. For those of you who are unaware, I work in pharmacy, and as you can imagine it has been a very busy and unrelenting year. This has had a large impact on most other aspects of my life and when it comes to X-Geeks – new reviews, articles and let’s plays etc, these have been few and far between this year. The reason for this is when I get home from work, I just want to rest and I have lacked the energy and motivation to create content. At this point, I want to say a huge thank you to Rob who has really helped us out with so many amazing reviews! I also want to thank Rich, for coming out of X-Geek retirement, and Jim for chipping in with content as well. I will be forever grateful. I want to also take a minute to give a special thank you to Ben (Nerdschatting), Heather (The Valkyries), Rob & Jim (Earth 9), Neil (GYCO) and Nicola (We Have A Hulk) – honestly, your kindness, patience and support this year has played a HUGE part as to why I am still standing and able to write this. It is an honour to know each and every one of you and I hope you all have a safe and merry Christmas!

The final ‘thank you’ goes out to every single person who has been tagged in, read, liked, shared and watched anything that we have done this year. While I may have monumentally failed to make it to 200 YouTube subscribers in 2020, which was my year’s objective, the fact that people are taking their time to watch the videos I make continues to blow me away! The same goes for anyone who reads any of our reviews. Thank you!

And finally, I can’t promise that 2021 will be any better than 2020. But with a vaccine in deployment and a new regime in the White House, there are some green shoots of hope. What I can promise is that our and my DMs will always be open for anyone who needs it.

Thank you. Have a safe Christmas and talk to you soon!

Ben 🧡
