What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands? Review

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

This review is spoiler-free.

So far this series, all the ‘choices’ made have led to a positive change throughout the MCU, but ‘what if’ this wasn’t always the case? What if the choice made leads down a darker, more sinister path? That is what we explore with Doctor Strange in the latest episode of What If?…

Visually, this is the most ambitious and creative episode so far. All the psychedelic and outrageous elements you’d expect from a Doctor Strange property is present here and they really push the animation to the very limits. While the character animation style is pretty much consistent with the overall series, you will notice some very subtle changes in some of the background animation and some of the more creative action sequences. This really suited the world of Doctor Strange, so I am very happy to see that they are not afraid to go ‘off-script’ when it fits with certain characters or storylines.

Speaking of the story, this is a very dark and intense episode, so essentially if you thought last week was a difficult watch, then you haven’t seen anything yet! As a standalone narrative, contextually, I really enjoyed this episode and I liked the way they used aspects of time in relation to the characters. Emotions play a huge part in directing the story and the title about ‘heart’ is very fitting on multiple levels.

While this might not be the most action-packed or fast-paced offering so far, I think I enjoyed this particular episode out of the four. The animation and creativity, mixed with all the feels you could imagine just made for a truly rewarding viewing experience. While I don’t think everyone will feel the same way, it just ticked every box for me personally.

What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands is a psychedelic adventure into the darkest corners of Marvel and explores love and loss in a way we haven’t seen before in the MCU. Stunning and creative animation sequences makes this the most visually impressive episode yet!
