It’s safe to say I cannot wait to have Temuera Morrison (Boba Fett) and Ming-Na Wen (Fennec Shand) back on our screens once again, only this time heading deep into the criminal underworld that always seems to thrive in the Star Wars universe.
We thought that The Mandalorian was going to focus around the criminal aspects, but after that first episode twist, the show took off in a different direction! While there are still plenty of shady characters and links to the criminal underworld, you just feel that The Book of Boba Fett is going to be the show to really have this concept as its focal point of the show’s narrative. Will the show pull from established and existing ideas like the crime families or the Crimson Dawn? Could we get some Solo or The Clone Wars/Rebels tie-ins? Who knows? But I think it is very clear, from this trailer that we are going to be walking into very ‘grey’ territory in terms of the show’s protagonists!
So, let’s look at the trailer in a little more detail, shall we?
One thing that we have learned, thanks to The Mandalorian, is that there trailers for these live-action Disney+ Star War shows only ever really pull from the first or second episodes, so when it comes to watching the series proper, there is so much of the show that we haven’t seen and that just makes it tens time more exciting and enjoyable. I think this is the same trick used here as the trailer focuses heavily on Jabba’s palace and outdoors in a city. Boba and Fennec chilling inside the palace, meeting the former leaders and a fight scene all seem very connected and close together, so I think there will be plenty of surprises waiting for us!
There were plenty of subtle hints and Easter eggs sprinkled in the trailer, in fact we actually started with one! For most people, kicking off the trailer with a spider-like droid acted as a rather interesting visual. Then there was some of us who went to the next level and started shouting “The B’omarr Order!” at our screens! The B’omarr Order are a religious sect of monks that believe in order to reach enlightenment, one must transcend physical sensations. So they decided to leave their fleshy remains behind and throw their brains into these mechanical vessels and thus becoming the thing you saw at the beginning of the trailer! They were also the original inhabitants of the palace before the Hutts took it over! We’ve actually seen the use of these spiders before in live-action, in Return of the Jedi! Remember when R2 and 3PO go to Jabba’s palace and once inside 3PO gets scared and panics as a robotic-looking spider crawls out of a side door? That was one of them! Now, I’m not saying that the B’omarr Order are an integral part of the show’s narrative, but it was just a cool little Easter egg right at the start that instantly raised my excitement levels with such a deep cut brought to the forefront.
So what about the rest of trailer? As usual I’ve pulled five things that stood out to me as my trailer highlights and we’ll look intro them in greater detail!
If you haven’t done so already, you can check out the trailer below:
5 Things From The Trailer:
A Simple Man…
I’m just happy that Temuera Morrison is getting the chance to play Boba Fett and be part of the Star Wars universe again! His performances are iconic and this just feels like the right show for him to build the character and bring to the level we hyped-up as kids, rather than the rather pathetic comedic relief we saw in Return of the Jedi! He just carries himself with such a commanding presence and we’ve already seen in The Mandalorian that he can pull off some great action too! I’m very excited to see what they have in store for us over these six episodes.
Heir to the Throne
Seeing that empty throne gave me the same type of reaction as seeing the Iron Throne for the first time. It was such a cool shot! Now, while we do see Boba sitting in in multiple times, I liked seeing it vacant as it acted as a visual representation of what some of the story will be about. Who gets to sit in the throne and lead this new, and unified, crime syndicate? I’m also very excited to see more of the palace and really getting to explore it a lot more! We have multiple scenes that appear to be in different parts of the palace, so we should hopefully get a much better look at it and go beyond the throne room – finally!
I’m The Captain Now!
I’m just so in love with the idea that Boba and Fennec are having to play politics in the underworld to try to solidify their position as the top dogs! Seeing Jabba’s former captains, most of whom probably enjoy the status quo, now having to deal with a potential new crime lord, who used to be part of ‘the help’ is really satisfying. You just know there is going to be a lot of plotting and scheming going on in the background and if they do try to focus on this new power shift it should make for exciting and gripping stories. Among the former generals we see a range of Trandoshans, Klatooinians and we even get an Aqualish in the mix too! I just love seeing these classic Star Wars aliens. For as much as I love the new trilogy, one of my biggest complaints was the aliens always seemed to be random creations and just very generic looking. One thing The Mandalorian, and now The Book of Boba Fett, has done is just restored that classic vibe that, when used correctly, just makes all the difference.
The Sands of Time?
This epic shot of Tusken Raiders emerging out of a sandstorm was both visually striking and also, possibly, hinted a look back into the past! Stay with me on this one, because this might just be more wishful thinking on my part! Could we get a series of flashbacks at some point that go on to explaining how Boba escaped the Sarlacc, his recovery and what he had been doing since Return of the Jedi? I say this because the robes of Tuskens look much darker and more in line with what Boba wears sans-armour. Could this shot be part of a flashback and is the Tusken in the middle in fact Boba? Look at the silhouette, very similar! Again, it might be nothing. But I do think it would be useful as part of the character’s development to get some closure on some of the questions surrounding his ‘resurrection’.
I love the shield design used here and given some of the melee fight scenes we saw in Boba’s return in The Mandalorian, I’m hoping that the show won’t just be all blasters! Give me some hard-hitting, well-choreographed melee combat fight scenes any day! There are not going to be lightsabers in the series, so having the electro staffs give you that ‘lightsaber feel’ without trying to shoe-horn a Jedi into the story. I think we can do a Star Wars product without a lightsaber now, I don’t think it’s something the audience still craves as a ‘must see’ in Star Wars.
