With the continued presence of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I feel like I could just copy and paste last year’s message!
First of all, THANK YOU to our incredible scientists for their work on the vaccine and our incredible NHS and frontline healthcare staff! You have my continued admiration and gratitude. It is also important to thank our retail workers as well, who, like many others have been there working through tough conditions during these unprecedented times! And here’s a shout-out to everyone who has done their part in trying to contain the virus, whether be it working from home or sacrificing meeting friends and family to help keep them safe. And here is another thank you to you, yes you reading this – Thank you!
Alongside most other businesses, 2021 saw the re-opening of cinemas and other places of entertainment, which was a welcome to owners, staff and customers alike. The last film I saw before the pandemic hit was Sonic The Hedgehog, and even when cinemas began to re-open, I still didn’t feel safe enough to return, even though I really wanted to help support an industry I love that had suffered greatly – even more so in regards to my local independent cinema which really needed regular business to keep going even before the pandemic! But, like many of you reading this, I did eventually return to the cinema, albeit very slowly and selectively! So far, I have seen Ghostbusters: Afterlife, The Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home and today (at time of writing December 24th) I went to see The Matrix Resurrections. While I still feel slightly nervous going to the cinema, it also brings huge comfort and for me it is trying to balance the anxiety with the benefits cinema can produce.
In terms of X-Geeks, it has been a steady year! Thanks to our wonderful contributors, especially Rob, we have managed to keep a steady output of reviews and content that hopefully you have enjoyed! As for the YouTube channel, getting those subscriber numbers up still remains an uphill struggle and this process can sometimes lead me to think “what’s the point? It’s not growing!” – but then I check the unique views and we have actually grown by 72% and this year our Octopi Game video soared past the 1k view mark in the matter of a week! So I do know its not all about the number of subscribers, because we have established a very loyal and regular group of people who consume our videos! So, thank you to every single one of you! As for 2022 – I would love to get to 222 subscribers! So, if you haven’t done so already, maybe consider giving us a sub? – SUBSCRIBE HERE!
Finally, I just want to thank everyone who has watched, read, liked or shared anything we’ve produced over the past year! Your continued support, interactions and friendship means the world to us and we are beyond grateful!
I hope you all have a safe and enjoyable Christmas, and if anyone needs to talk over the festive period, or anytime for that matter, my DMs are always open! I will also once again be taking part in #JoinIn on Twitter on Christmas Day, so feel free to reach out and chat if you need it, I’ll be there for you – day and night!
Be safe, be kind, take care and have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!
