“Purpose is more burden than glory…” – Welcome to the finale of Loki Season 2!
There are some emotional and incredible callbacks, not only in relation to the Loki series but Loki as a character as seen in the previous MCU movies. This was very fitting, as from start to finish, this Season 2 finale was a roller coaster of emotions. The writing was beyond spectacular, and the episode kicked off at breakneck speed – the pacing was phenomenal. The editing was slick and snappy and matched the creativity of the writing. Speaking of the writing…
Loki Season 2 has been a wonderful science fiction adventure, but this final episode goes beyond the MCU and is, hands down, one of the greatest pieces of sci-fi television that I have ever experienced. It was inventive, surprising, and flawless. The consistency of the writing, the performances, the music… everything was a ten out of ten! In addition to the wonderful sci-fi storytelling, there was a lot of great humour and heartbreaking emotional beats that elevated the episode to even greater heights. I was genuinely in awe of this entire episode. And as for THAT ending? It was poetry. It was a piece of art. There is no spoiler-free way in which I can explain it, but the execution, even if expected, was superb.
I touched on it briefly, but it would be an injustice if I didn’t mention the cast. The entire ensemble has been amazing throughout, but this finale was all about Tom Hiddleston and Loki. It was the pinnacle performance. The journey and transformation of Loki within the MCU have been spellbinding and consistently intriguing. I also felt that this was Tom Hiddleston’s audition for The Doctor! Going off this performance, he’d fit right into Doctor Who!
As we have come to expect, the visuals and score are such a unique element to the series and continue to keep Loki distinct from other MCU series. The finale goes all in and is a visual and audible feast that will satisfy even the most gluttonous of appetites! There is one outfit transition sequence that was simply glorious (and full of purpose!).
As a series overall, I think this has been consistently outstanding across the board. Writing, performances, visuals, and score. Everything has been faultless. Does this see the end of Loki in its current guise? I’m not sure. If this was to be the full story they wanted to tell in a series, then I’d accept it. But I am a greedy boy. And I think these characters are too good to be left on the sidelines, so I fully expect that we see them return in some form – be it in a third series or as part of the intergalactic multiverse that is expanding before our very eyes!
The Season 2 finale of Loki goes above and beyond all expectations and reaffirms its place as the greatest MCU television series. This was nothing short of sci-fi greatness…
