Two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is rumoured to be in final contract negotiations to star in Thor: Ragnarok.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, at the recent BAFTA Awards, The Hulk himself Mark Ruffalo said:
“I’m so thrilled… She’s just one of the best, and to have her play a baddie is going to be really exciting.”
Ruffalo will reprise his role of The Hulk and star alongside Chris Hemswoth in the third Thor film. So with all that in mind, could Cate Blanchett really be heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
If we take Ruffalo at his word (He has been known to tell white lies in the past regarding Marvel things), then we are really in for a treat!
Cate Blanchett’s body of work speaks for itself. She is a truly a phenomenal actress and she has already earned her Geek Stripes with her role in The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Having a strong and powerful female supervillain would be a much needed refreshing change of pace for Marvel.
While James Spader was outstanding, Ultron himself was very cookie-cutterish and easily defeated in the end.
Many of the Supervillians (Loki excluded) have been very generic and samey, we have yet to see a villain that really brings a genuine threat.
Marvel could be on to a winner with Blanchett in the villain role, not just in Thor: Ragnarok but in future movies. Could you imagine her appearing in Infinity Wars?
Another benefit to an actress of Cate Blanchett’s calibre taking on a powerful role in the MCU is that it could finally get us that infamous Black Widow solo movie. We need to be seeing more female superheroes and villains in prominent roles.
If Star Wars: The Force Awakens has shown us anything, is that even the most stubborn of fanboys have no issue with a massive franchise with a female lead.
We want to see talented women taking the leads in films, we want to action figures, we want all of it, so make it happen!
So what about the potential roles for Cate Blanchett in Thor: Ragnarok?
There are two very obvious candidates who she could be playing in the Thor mini-verse, Enchantress or Hela. There is also a third option, so let’s look at them!
Now, there have been two different incarnations of The Enchantress, so it will be interesting to see if they go with Amora or the more recent Sylvie.
She was most notably sent on a special mission by Odin to kill Thor’s human love interest Jane Foster, so that he could focus on his Asgardian duties instead.
As an Asgardian, Enchantress possess all the standard superhuman traits of speed, strength, durability and stamina.
Similar to Loki, her strength lies in her magical abilities of manipulation, which has lead The Enchantress and Loki to work together to defeat Thor on many occasions.
Due to the connections with Loki and the potential for a Jane Foster/Enchantress face off, this seems a good bet.
Cate already has the look to play the role, and her acting will add gravitas that transcends the comic book character for sure.
Given that Ragnarok means the end of the Norse Gods and their end, it is fitting that the potential baddy Cate could play is Hela, The Asgardian Goddess of Death.
She is the ruler of Hel and a constant threat to Thor and those around him.
As well as the standard Asgardian superpowers, Hela has the ability of astral projection, levitation and a magical cloak that keeps her young and increases her powers.
She is able to command the dead so we could have the possibility of Thor’s fallen enemies returning for one final fight.
She is also able to fire deadly bolts from her hands and her touch is lethal to any human she makes contact with.
The Goddess of Death and the Norse God apocalypse all fits, so it could very well be that Hela is the big baddy Ruffalo was referring to.
The only thing that casts a shadow of a doubt that it will be Hela is that she is a very overpowered character. She would be just about stepping on the edge of Thanos powerful territory, and with Thanos being built as the Big Bag of the MCU, it’s unlikely they will want any supervillain to come close to that.
3: None of The Above
There is also a third option, a different or completely new character altogether. In any case, IF Cate Blanchett does join the MCU she will undoubtedly be fantastic!
