Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (Super Bowl Trailer)

While the Super Bowl may not be that big of a deal to a lot of us here in the UK, as cinema goers it does give us the chance to be bombarded with awesome new film trailers.

Out of the many trailers shown, it was a new Guardians of the Galaxy trailer that really stood out from the others.

If you haven’t done so already, you can watch the trailer below.

Excitement is building for this movie, and rightfully so, given the massive success of the first film. Despite all it’s success, there is always that worry of a sequel not being as good, or better, than the first film. The expectations are high and we really want the next installment to deliver. The first film was a D-List comic title that took the box office by storm, mainly due to the brilliant script and talented cast and director. Guardians showed that Marvel didn’t need to rely on their big named characters, and thanks to Guardians success, it has paved the way for lesser known titles to get the green-light for the next phase of the MCU.

So with so much anticipation on Vol 2, can it live up to fan expectation? From everything we have seen so far, the answer is definitely yes. Every trailer has surpassed the previous one, and we still know very little about the story, which is keeping everyone guessing and further adds to the excitement.

This third trailer not only introduces Ayesha to us, but it does seem to feature a lot of the female cast. The first Guardians film set its stall out very early in terms of what type of female characters you would see in the film. Out of all the Marvel movies so far, the first Guardians film did the best to diversify and give more time to the female cast members. From this latest trailer, it’s clear that this will continue in Vol 2 and hopefully be expanded upon. With Guardians doing their thing and with DC releasing Wonder Woman this year, hopefully it shows to the studio bosses that fans will accept a female-led comic book movie. With Captain Marvel coming to cinemas in a few years’ time too, the future looks very promising indeed.

So what about the trailer itself? We have taken some of the trailer’s best moments and decided to take a closer look.

4 Things From The Trailer:

Golden Girl

There have been many incarnations of Ayesha in the comic book world. ‘Her’, ‘Kismet’ or ‘Paragon’ are just some of the names she has gone by in the past. Names may change, but her origin remains the same. She was created by the Enclave, who had attempted to create an artificial super-powered being. As well as being able to regenerate (making her basically immortal), she also has super strength and advanced fighting skills. Ayshea also has the power to manipulate cosmic energy. As GotG is all about the ‘cosmic’ you can imagine that the main focus of her character will be based around this ability.
Ayshea is being played by Elizabeth Debicki, who was simply outstanding in the recent Tom Hiddleston spy drama The Night Manager. (Could we see an on-onscreen reunion between the two in a future MCU movie? A Loki/Ayesha meetup would be pretty cool.)
It was nice to finally see her in the trailer, and it’s clear that she has a large role to play in the movie. Keeping her back like this was a smart move in many ways, as it keeps her role a mystery. We are very excited to see her on-screen and hopefully have much more of an impact than Ronan the Accuser.

Gamora’S BFG

There isn’t much to analyse about this image. It’s Gamora with a massive gun. What more is there to say? It’s a great visual, and perfect for a trailer. As mentioned previously, there is a lot of focus on the female characters in the trailer, and this is just another example of a Marvel movie with a strong, diverse and powerful female cast.

She’s Blue (Da Ba Dee Dab A Die)

While she may have been a little underused in the first movie, we have hope that she will play a much larger role in Vol 2. While she played the secondary villain role in the first film, she will be an anti-hero of sorts in the sequel. Seeing her fighting alongside her ‘sister’ and the other Guardians is going to be pretty special. While her dialogue may have only been a war-cry in this trailer, there will hopefully be much more character development in the film as well as more interaction with Gamora.

The Guardians of the Galaxy

This was the perfect shot to end the trailer on. It’s the team we know and love, with the additions of the new Guardians – Mantis, Yondu and Nebula. While the onscreen visual looks bad-ass, in true Guardians style it is interrupted by a perfect comedic moment. Mantis getting hit by the projectile and Drax’s reaction was perfect.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 reaches UK cinemas on the 28th of April , 2017
