Zoe doesn’t like Christmas. I love Christmas. So how do we make it work? Well, there’ no chance of a Star Wars Christmas that’s for sure! (Much to my disappointment.) But last year we decided to make Christmas work for the both of us thanks to our love of Harry Potter.
Zoe and I are hosting Christmas for our family this year. This is also the first time that we will be having a proper Christmas together as a couple, given that last year, she went back up North to spend a few days with her family. Last year we themed our tree and living room around Harry Potter. We had the floating candles and house colours themed tree. We had a traditional star on top of the tree, with a Niffler Funko looking longingly at it. This year, he’s managed to steal it and we have replaced the traditional Christmas star with the Sorting Hat. – But we haven’t just stopped at the living room. We’ve made the decision to go full Potter! We’ve done the entire house and going forwards, each year will be based on a different book, so this year it is The Philosopher’s Stone.
We want to welcome you into our home and for you to share our Harry Potter Christmas!
The Living Room:
As well as the candles and tree, we’ve added portraits! We’ve filled them with photographs honouring our families. Zoe has also learned how to knit and since August she has been making stockings for all the family (including the dogs!). But the centrepiece is our Hogwarts crest! This was crafted over a period of five months by my mother, which she made out of clay. It’s so heavy that we’ve actually had to drill hooks into the chimney breast, and it looks like that will be staying up all year round!
We will be hosting Christmas dinner for our family, so we’ve decorated accordingly! We have house bunting and house banners covering the kitchen, whilst in the dining room, we have the Harry Potter letters, all with the wax Hogwarts seal.
At the back door, we have Hagrid’s keys and lantern, we also have our Forbidden Forest sign warning our guests in case they venture into our garden. We also have signs for all the dormitories.
The back bedroom is Hufflepuff, the front bedroom is Gryffindor with the master bedroom (ours) acting as the Slytherin dormitory. My gaming room is Ravenclaw. I’m a Hufflepuff and Zoe is a Slytherin, so she’s not happy that I’m staying in ‘her’ room. – We also have the giant squid and some shrubs painted on the windows.
So there you have it, our own little Hogwarts in the heart of the East-Midlands. We hope you’ve enjoyed our Christmas decorations and we wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
