Locke & Key Trailer #1 Review

By Ben Wright (@iamzavagno | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

(This is a spoiler-free review! I will not be revealing anything from the graphic novels, so rest easy!)

Netflix has given us our first taste of their adaption of Locke & Key and I am beyond excited! The trailer gave me goosebumps! I will be honest, I was a little nervous before I hit the play button. I LOVE this story and these characters so much, so whenever something you love is getting adapted there is always a worry that it won’t be any good. From this trailer, I have full confidence that the show is going to be a fantastic adaption and a show that will get people talking!

After the trailer hit, I saw comments online, from people unaware of Locke & Key, calling it a Stranger Things rip-off. There was a surprising amount of cynicism towards it. This didn’t really come as a shock to me, as at a glance, it shares similar visuals and tones with the recent IT movies and, of course, Stranger Things. But the thing is, Locke & Key is so much more than both of these! Now, I’m not saying that this TV show is going to be better than Stranger Things, but if you put a gun to my head and asked me to pick between three seasons of Stranger Things, of which I love, and the story of Locke & Key, I wouldn’t think twice. Locke & Key would be my immediate answer! Why? Because the story is just so damn good and the mix of characters are as close to perfection as you can get. I am so excited for people to witness this story! It looks like they’ve nailed it, so hopefully, the full series reflects the positives from the trailer!

If you haven’t done so already, be sure to check the trailer below.

Goosebumps again!

Man, where to start with this? It just feels so right! The casting looks perfect and the locations and setting are ripped straight from the page. The trailer does well in establishing the basic plot – ‘kids in a new house, find magical keys, something evil is after them’ – without giving away all of the story’s amazing reveals. I like that they have produced a really exciting trailer, yet this is only just scratching the surface of what is in store for the viewers! I also think the music is perfect and it actually is nearly identical to that featured in the full-cast audiobook adaption, but then again the music in that was perfect, so why wouldn’t you stick to something similar? – You can check out our review of Audible’s Locke & Key here.

As always, I have picked my top five scenes from the trailer to take a closer look.

5 Things From The Trailer:

Welcome To Keyhouse

Perfect! Just perfect!

Keyhouse looks great! It has flawlessly made the transition from page to screen. The exterior is just so visually striking, especially with the additional outer buildings, which will also play a big part in the story. The interior is just as on-point as the exterior, with a look that just smacks of a house full of mystery, secrets and horrors.

The Keys are KEY!

They really are!

I LOVE how they have only really shown one of the keys powers, but even then they haven’t really gone into any real detail about it. There is one key in particular that I am very eager to see how they pull it off, and while they tease it in this trailer, they never show the reveal. That is, err, key! My biggest worry, going into this trailer, was that they would show us too much. Thankfully they haven’t and I want it to remain that way! There are so many amazing things that haven’t been shown and I think it’s a great and smart move to keep their cards close to their chest, especially in regards to an audience without prior knowledge of the story. That being said, I am also hoping for a few twists and new elements, for those who are clued up on the events in the graphic novels.

Over The Rainbow

Now. I get what is happening in this scene, so I won’t explain it, but it’s safe-to-say that it is perfect!

As I’ve already mentioned, the keys are going to take the viewers to some amazing and terrifying places, and what they have done here is really, really good! There is little more to say without spoiling it, but the bright colours jump out at you, in stark contrast to other parts of the trailer, which highlights the different tones that the show is going to transition between.

The Lady In The Well

Again, I’m not going to spoil anything about this. In fact, I’m not really going to say much at all. It is perfect. This character is, hopefully, going to be great, and I cannot wait to see how they use them!

*excited squeak*

The Dark Side, And The Light…

There’s a knock-off lightsaber, of course, I was going to make a Star Wars reference!

But here’s the thing, the trailer does an outstanding job of balancing the different tones. This is a fantasy horror-drama mystery-adventure! The journey that the show will go through is going to navigate all these different genres and the trailer is a perfect reflection of that. Here we see the Loke kids being pursued by dark shadow creatures, but the multicoloured lightsaber is in stark contrast to the horror elements. As with other parts of the trailer, going from dark to light colour palettes, or even mixing them, is so visually interesting it just helps the overall unique aesthetic of the show.

Locke & Key arrives on Netflix on February 7th 2020.
