For me, this episode was all about Homelander. We once again get to witness his un-nerving relationship with Madelyn thanks to his use of Doppelgänger. The pleasure he gets from her milk just makes me gag. Publicly he may continue to act like everything is hunky dory but inside he’s crumbling and this is in large part due to Stormfront’s popularity. Deciding The Seven need a facelift causes him to tell one of them their services are no longer required and also make a huge announcement about Queen Maeve on national tv. The Deep is putting plans in place to improve his image and there are some quite funny moments as he does so, including a pretty entertaining Ed Sheeran story.
Starlight and Hughie make some time to bask in their glory now that CompoundV has been exposed. However, she goes into a panic at the thought of returning to base and instead goes on a road trip with Hughie and Mother’s Milk as they try to find an old supe named Liberty. There were some really nice scenes where Starlight and Mother’s Milk begin to bond over their troubled pasts and also again as we learn about his OCD. Their search for Liberty results in a big revelation about one of The Seven which is a great twist to the story so far. It’s shocking and I’m excited to see how that plays out. Billy manages to find Becca but their reconnection is cut very short. Frenchie heads on a downward spiral as he just doesn’t know how to make things better for Kimiko who is in mourning for her brother.
Now we get to that end scene. This has be to be one of the best scenes I’ve ever seen on any show. It’s so awkward that you don’t want to look at the screen but you also can’t take your eyes away from it. Doppelgänger morphs into Homelander and provides him with an experience that is just so awkward but encapsulates everything we love about The Boys. It was exceptional and once again, so was Antony Starr.
Episode 4 was a little slower paced than last week but still managed to give us everything we expect from The Boys. I want to watch it all right now but I also don’t want this season to end.
