Oh my, Oh my, Oh my…
This has been a long time coming. Ten years in the making and it all started back in 2008 with a rich billionaire and a flying metal suit. The seed that was Iron Man grew into the mighty, ginormous Marvel Cinematic Universe. Branching off this juggernaut of a film tree were many different branches, all special in their own way, but all still connected.
If you haven’t done so already (AND WHY THE HELL NOT!?), you can watch the trailer below.
When I first watched this trailer, I got goosebumps. My eyes DID get very watery. That is because the anticipation of this film is so high. There are very few franchises that emotionally affect me in this way. Star Wars wins hands down every time, but the MCU, like Harry Potter, holds such a special place in my heart. It also helps when you have an insanely emotive score like the slowed down Avengers theme playing in your trailer.
The reaction on social media has been as you would expect, its a joyful place of people coming together in their love of the MCU and sharing their excitement with other people online. But there will always be some negativity, already some are making the attack comparisons to the DCEU and the Justice League movie. I think our friends @Nerdifi_MCR put it best – “Hop on the DC vs Marvel, Avengers vs Justice League band wagon if you want… I’m just so damned happy to have both!” – And that’s the thing. We can have both and enjoy both. It doesn’t have to be a competition when it comes to the fans. We should be supporting all superhero properties because when they are successful we get even more!
With that out the way, let’s bring it back to the trailer review! As always we pick out the TOP 5 moments that stood out the most.
5 Things From The Trailer:
A bit odd to pick a branding promo as one of the best things about the trailer I know, but allow me to explain. We only really get to witness the full animated Marvel promo when we are either in the cinema or watching at home. They don’t attach it to trailers. When you witness this promo on the big screen, I don’t know about you, but I instantly get even more excited. So it was a clever move to put this in a trailer for such a hyped movie. This intro made the trailer feel like an event, and an event it was.
Purple Rain… Of Pain
I tried to avoid reading what people were talking about the trailer before I had written this review, but one comment did catch my eye. Someone mentioned that Josh Brolin’s Thanos looked like a purple Joss Whedon. Made me laugh.
They’ve clearly gone back to the drawing board a little with his design, but it’s the best he’s looked, especially given his messy CGI debut appearance in The Avengers. Throughout the trailer, he looked outstanding and he looked very strong. They sold him well as a big threat, and hopefully, that will translate into the final movie.
Ooo, Suits You Sir
How can you not be excited about Peter’s armoured Spidey-suit? It looks sensational! A lot of our heroes are going to have to armour up if they are going to be able to stand toe-to-toe with Thanos. And given we see Thanos slamming Spider-Man into the ground later on in the trailer, they are going to need all the help they can get. But back to the suit, the metallic shine worked really well and looked great visually. I’m also very happy with the job they have done with the eyes. A big thumbs up for the Iron Spider!
We had the ‘splash page’ in the Civil War trailer with the two sides during the airport fight. Here we get a similar shot with a range of heroes charging down at Thanos’ oncoming warriors. Seeing Cap leading the line, his majestic beard in slow motion with new gauntlets? Stunning! This was just such a superhero moment. I’m sure we will be seeing this GIF a lot on Twitter in the days to follow.
Guardians Of The Moustache
It’s Marvel, there was always going to be a stinger and boy was it a good one. We have Thor, looking bad ass with his eye patch, talking to the freaking Guardians of the Galaxy! I must admit I was waiting for Rocket to spout that famous line or for Star-Lord to crack out “I’m Star-Lord man” – But no, just a subtle wave from Mantis. It was perfect. They didn’t need to have dialogue. I’m glad they didn’t, save it, they are only going to be in a small portion of the film anyway so keep the mystery.
So there you have it, our top five moments from our… no, wait, this is a Marvel review, right? it can’t end here? Surely there must be a…
Human-looking Vision? Loki with the Tesseract! – I mention these two as they are my top picks to die in the movie. Vision because of inevitability and Loki so he can fulfil his redemption story arc with self-sacrifice and finally proving himself worthy to Thor.
Peter HAS spider sense! Just like my reaction the trailer, there were goosebumps! Reacting to danger just in time to take action. Though I am a little tired of “things in the sky” in superhero movies.
Wakanda Forever! It’s very clear that a lot of our time will be spent in Wakanda and I’m very pleased about that. As we mentioned in our Black Panther trailer review, some are rubbishing the film a little, but it’s clear here that it has such a large role to play in the MCU. Could it be that Thanos’ attention has fallen on Wakanda because that is the resting place of the final Infinity Stone?
