Hawkeye – Episode 4 Review

By Robert Ernest (@thatRobster | www.xgeeks.co.uk)

This review contains very mild spoilers.

This episode slowed the pace down for a moment and did some story building, revisited some threads from previous episodes and most valuably, cemented that bond between Clint and Kate – oh, and delivered a scream at the screen moment at the end.

Let’s just get to it … Florence Pugh reprised her role as Yelena for some fantastic rooftop fisty cuffs. It’s clear that the seed planted by Allegra de Fontaine hasn’t been resolved and she has got it in for Clint. The scene on the rooftop between Clint, Kate, Echo and a mysterious, masked other was thrilling enough but when Yelena reveals herself I practically screamed. She took command of that moment and her head shake telling Kate no while aiming for her showed so much gravitas. We need her back for the last two episodes and it will be interesting to see how Clint reacts to her due to all the guilt he already feels over Natasha’s death.

Asides from that shock, the best thing about this episode was the continued bonding between Clint and Kate. I’ve grown to love these two together and him teaching her to dash a killer coin was fun. There’s a lot of reflection going on from Clint’s side and his emotions are like a pendulum as he wants to keep a distance but can’t help but grow attached to her. There’s a moment where Kate is hanging from the side of a building and this is a huge trigger for him. The flashbacks to Endgame in this episode were so well placed and worked so well in tying Clint’s present state of mind to events from the past.

Elsewhere, Eleanor is showing that there really is more in the shadows which is bound to feature more before the end of the series. There were plenty of little Easter eggs too – Clint drinking out of a ‘Thanos was right’ mug echoed the graffiti we saw in episode one. I also enjoyed the Christmas movie theme of whether Clint ever will make it home to his family for Christmas Day.

The penultimate episode of these shows is normally a biggy so I’m super excited to see what happens next week.
