Jurassic World: Dominion Trailer Review

Before I get into the breakdown, I want to quickly address why this film makes me nervous and despite my excitement, I might not end up actually going to see it in the cinema, despite being a HUGE fan of the Jurassic Park franchise!

Firstly, Rexy has been a mainstay in my cinematic life, and it was seeing her in Jurassic Park as a kid, back in 1994, that was the spark that lighted my interest in film! I teared up at the end of the first Jurassic World movie, as sat in the cinema and watched her roar over her kingdom like the QUEEN she is! But she has also just gone past the longest age that a T-Rex can naturally reach. So, I have a horrible feeling that they are going to kill her off in this film and I don’t know if I am mentally prepared to lose a creature that I love so much. If that wasn’t bad enough, I am also terrified of this movie’s setting…

Why am I nervous when dinosaurs reach the mainland? It goes back to my steadfast film and tv principle that if you kill a dog in a graphic or unnecessary way then I am done with whatever I’m watching. I have walked out of the cinema several times over this issue. I have also only watched The Lost World: Jurassic Park once all the way through, despite it being my favourite story premise in the franchise, and that was when it came out in the cinema! If I watch it now, I turn it off after they leave the island. Why? Because they kill the young boy’s dog, and it was totally unnecessary. Oh, and by the way F*** you David Koepp for writing that into the movie! Likewise, I was worried about Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom because of the potential of there being security dogs at the mansion! Luckily that was fine. But now that dinosaurs are fully loose in the real world I am once again having to rely on friends who will be at the press screenings to let me know in advance if I can even go and watch this movie!

Anyway, with my rant over, let us look at the exciting things that this trailer offered up to us!

If you haven’t done so already, make sure you check out the trailer below:

For me, this trailer compliments the current set of films with the nostalgia factor of the originals, and it appears to complement each other well! There were some truly stunning shots in this trailer and hopefully there are more saved for the film itself! The re-worked Jurassic Park theme just instantly hits me right in the feels and it’s almost a cheat at this point to use it in your trailer!

Seeing four of the cast members from the first movie really played into the title cards they used as this movie really does feel like an epic conclusion. Let’s just hope they can stick the landing!

The action scenes look really tense, and I think the balance shifting towards the dinosaurs makes them more of a threat, be it involuntary or due to their predatory nature, because there were even some herbivore dinos that were causing chaos in this trailer! Finally, and this is a weird one, I personally am glad to see so many feathers on display. I know it’s not something that bothers most moviegoers, but as someone who has a passion for dinosaurs, I do enjoy seeing it!

5 Things From The Trailer:

Baby Blue

We last saw Blue running away into the forest after the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. While all of us fully expected her to appear in the final movie, I don’t think many of us would expect that she is now a mother! Beta is the apparent child of Blue but in terms of how I guess life really did find a way! (Although we do know there were breeding males in Jurassic World). Their protection and survival appear to be a large part of Owen’s motivation in the movie and it will be interesting to see how they conclude their journey.

You’re Gonna Need A Bigger Boat

Whenever I have spoken about the world of Jurassic Park, I have always championed the inclusion of aquatic dinosaurs. So, when then Mosasaurus was introduced in Jurassic World I was over the moon! The opening of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, as mentioned in our film review, was THE greatest opening for any Jurassic movie, and I stand by that! The underwater aspects are such a refreshing change of the usually land-based, dino action that we are used to! Seeing the Mosasaurus in the trailer was great, and while I doubt, she will have much to do in the movie in general, I loved that they have still included her.

As Above, So Below

This was probably one of my favourite shots in the entire trailer! I loved the horizontal split and seeing Claire hiding for her life against this new predatory dinosaur felt like a tense scene. I’m intrigued to see the conclusion of this sequence and I think they showed us the right amount, satisfying the trailer needs, without giving too much of the game away!

Terror Flaps

I mentioned previously that Jurassic Park was the first movie to really leave a lasting impression on me as a child, and the Dilophosaurus scene with Dennis Nedry, from the first movie, haunted my early years for a long time! It was the ‘flaps’ scene that terrified me and having it back here is a great call-back for such an iconic dinosaur in the franchise that hasn’t been seen for a while!

JP Generations

Some will have wanted this shot saved for the movie, but for me I have no issues with it being used in the trailer to add some real hype at the end! As we know the ‘holy trinity’ are returning, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that, unlike the previous cameos, we would see a lot of interaction between the old and new set of movies. Having all these characters on screen was great to see!
