After what feels like an eternity, we have FINALLY gotten our first look at Thor Love and Thunder!
First of all, let’s start with the music that will be causing great frustration, from a copyright point of view, to many YouTube reactors right now! The trailer uses Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses! Not only is this a great song for any trailer, but it goes beyond that as the lyrics mirror and reflect a lot of Thor’s own past and what he is going through, so while it’s a great song to use in general, it does hold much more meaning as well!
In terms of the story tone, Thor appears to be going on a voyage of self-discovery, to find out who he truly is and figure out his new place in the galaxy. In the process, he is likely to grow more powerful as his life becomes more focused and he unlocks what it means to be himself. So, this is a very interesting concept for the story to be based around and I know they will have lots of surprises along the way.
There is a huge Jack Kirby influence, much like the previous movie, throughout the trailer – be that in costume design or the settings, so I cannot wait to see what other Kirby-influences appear in the movie! We see a great shot of Falligar the Behemoth – who appeared in the Thor comic Thor: God of Thunder and this scene is ripped straight from the pages of the comic book!
As for the ‘Asgardians of the Galaxy’, I feel that they will be in the opening act before departing and leaving Thor to his quest and we even see them flying off to their own adventure in GOTG Vol 3! So, for fans of the Guardians, I wouldn’t count on them being around for too long in the movie!
If you haven’t don’t so already, you can check the trailer out below:
As always, we go through the trailer and pick out our TOP 5 moments!
5 Things From The Trailer:
Remember Loki’s words to Thor in Infinity War? “The sun will shine on us again…”, well for Thor in particular that sun is shining!
What an incredible-looking shot! It seems like Thor is trying to centre himself which is all part of the journey to ‘find himself’ that he’ll be undertaking in this movie!
The entire look of Olympus just stands out so much in regard to other places within the MCU!
While I don’t expect to spend too much time here, I feel the time we do spend here is going to be one of the movie’s most aesthetically pleasing environments! Everything is floaty and so ethereal, but with a science and technological look mixed in too! In the teaser we see Thor 1, Thor 2, Valkyrie and Korg entering the city, and my gut is telling me this is after the attack on New Asgard which I’ll come to in a minute!
Sticking with the Greek mythology aspects, Russell Crowe is going to crush it as Zeus, I can feel it already!
That said, I don’t think he’ll be around for long in the film, as he would be a prime candidate for Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale, to kill off since Gorr is on a mission to cause the extinction of all the gods across the universe. What better way to show your ‘big bad’ means businesses by killing off one of the most powerful and well-known gods around?
While I can’t see it happening, I would be interested to see if they factor in any of the Egyptian gods from Moon Knight – that would be a nice link!
New Asgard is looking great and clearly embracing the tourism industry as a way of acquiring wealth!
The sign also states its former name of Tonsberg, which featured in the flashback in Thor and was the same place that Red Skull found the Tesseract in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Also, in Spider Man: No Way Home there is a possible Easter Egg for what is taking place in New Asgard in this movie. On a news report in No Way Home, we see a scrolling news update stating – “Political turmoil continues in New Asgard”. This could reflect why Valkyrie is looking so frustrated and why all those country officials are all around a table discussing. Her bored and frustrated expression could also be an indicator as to why she joins up with Thor on his adventure.
Jane Foster wielding Mjolnir – you love to see it!
Much to Thor’s shock, his former love is now battling it out as a superhero and looking at this scene, it appears the battle is on Earth, as there are cars in the background, and it looks like an attack on New Asgard! Is this the moment that leads them to journey to Olympus and seek out Zeus?
I’ll be interested to see what events leads Jane to become Thor, even more so if they pull a specific story from the comics – with one in mind in particular that I think would be a great direction to go!
